Off-grid solar power systems are used where
there is no grid power. Solar panels convert the
sun's energy into electricity for use in
appliances (both DC and AC). The major
components in an off-grid system are:
-
Solar
PV panels - they convert energy from the sun
into DC power, mainly 12V and 24V. The system
size installed is depended upon the number and
size of each panel/module.
-
Charge
controller - this component controls the charge
from the panels to the battery, to avoid
destroying the battery.
-
Batteries - the batteries store the energy for
use at night when the sun is not shining. Note
that one needs suitable solar batteries for this
system. Batteries have to be deep cycle
maintenance-free type. It is possible to tap
power directly from the batteries to power DC
appliances.
-
Inverter - this unit converts DC power to AC
power (120V, 230V, 400V etc) so that AC
appliances can run. Most home appliances use AC
power to operate.
-
Other
components include module combiners, panel
mounting frames, DC/AC breakers, lightning
protection and others.
